Fifteen centenarians living in their homes were interviewed. Overall abilities to conduct daily living and the care support they receive were assessed. The findings were as follows: 1)Forty percent of the subjects were in the Seikatsujiritsu group(independent)and sixty percent of them were in the Netakiri group(housebound to bedridden)by the ADL classification for the impaired elderly set by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan. 2)In the Seikatsujiritsu group, the scores of the basic ADL(Barthel Index)and the communication ADL were very high; the score of MMSE to show cognitive ability was 22.3; and they were socially active. However, the score of the instrumental ADL was low for shopping, preparation of meals and housework. Everyone in the group needed some care support from family members. 3)In the Netakiri group, the scores of the basic ADL and the communication ADL were much lower compared to the Seikatsujiritsu group and everyone needed care support at more than the half-care level. Four persons out of nine had clearly low levels of cognitive function suggestive of dementia condition, but they did not have frequent abnormal behaviors. 4)The score of subjective happiness of the Netakiri group, excluding persons with dementia, was quite high and in the same level with the Seikatsujiritsu group. This may be related to the long healthy independent years they had before they became dependent and the many social contacts they still keep. 5)The conditions for centenarians to be able to keep living in their homes were to be physically healthy, the loss of overall living ability be not too bad, and abnormal behaviors caused by dementia be infrequent. As for the care support, the conditions such as the existence of an extra care provider, the positive attitude toward caregiving, the social care support such as home health nursing and other care services were
